Visual Culture Project: Confederate War Etchings: Searching for Arms by Adalbert Johann Volck
Adalbert Johann Volckâs 1861 sketch of Union soldiers, âSearching for Arms,â represents a substantial contribution to the narrative about gender relations during the American Civil War. This simple, small sketch offers the observer a window into the past. It is a collision of symbols and meaningâfrom gender to war to the householdâall wrapped up in one image. This is a portrait sketch of a woman being invaded in her domestic, private sphere, revealing so much about gender relations during the time. The mistress herself seemed to embody a vast range of sentiments such as anger, fear, frailty, and strength, proving the tension in her role as a wife, a mother, and guardian of the home. This inner conflict is something that all women faced during this time as they strove to remain loyal to the cause for which their husbands fought
Longitudinal Polarization at future Colliders and Virtual New Physics Effects
The theoretical merits of longitudinal polarization asymmetries of
electron-positron annihilation into two final fermions at future colliders are
examined, using a recently proposed theoretical description. A number of
interesting features, valid for searches of virtual effects of new physics, is
underlined, that is reminiscent of analogous properties valid on top of
resonance. As an application to a concrete example, we consider the case of a
model with triple anomalous gauge couplings and show that the additional
information provided by these asymmetries would lead to a drastic reduction of
the allowed domain of the relevant parameters.Comment: 18 pages and 1 figure. e-mail: [email protected]

Tree indiscernibilities, revisited
We give definitions that distinguish between two notions of indiscernibility
for a set \{a_\eta \mid \eta \in \W\} that saw original use in \cite{sh90},
which we name \textit{\s-} and \textit{\n-indiscernibility}. Using these
definitions and detailed proofs, we prove \s- and \n-modeling theorems and
give applications of these theorems. In particular, we verify a step in the
argument that TP is equivalent to TP or TP that has not seen
explication in the literature. In the Appendix, we exposit the proofs of

California needs to begin a serious and comprehensive plan to adapt to what may be a very long drought
California is currently in the midst of one of the worst droughts in the stateâs history. Despite the crisis, the Golden Stateâs taps continue to run, with water use now far exceeding supply. B. Lynn Ingram writes that the current drought is just one of many very dry periods California has experienced regularly over the last 5,000 years or so. Taking the hardship of indigenous populations in previous droughts as a warning, she writes that the stateâs rapid population growth is placing huge pressure on local water reserves. A comprehensive plan which takes advantage of new technologies such as wastewater recycling and ocean desalinization is now needed to adapt to the growing scarcity of water
To cope with Californiaâs drought, policymakers must gobeyond water conservation and rationing
Two thirds of the state of California is experiencing extreme to exceptional drought conditions after four dry years. B. Lynn Ingram writes that to cope with the drought, those in the Golden State need to plan for the long-term to increase resilience to extended water scarcity. She argues that policymakers must now think more collaboratively about reducing the âwater footprintâ of Californians and the products they produce
An exploratory study investigating factors associated with adherence to chest physiotherapy and exercise in adults with cystic fibrosis
Copyright @ 2009 European Cystic Fibrosis Society. This article is available through Elsevier's Open Access Archives and covered by Elsevier's user license: http://www.elsevier.com/about/open-access/open-access-policies/oa-license-policy/elsevier-user-license.This study explored the relationship between psychological and demographic variables relating to chest physiotherapy (CP) and exercise in adults with cystic fibrosis. The main results were that adherence to both treatments was low and analysis of variance indicated that severity and gender were associated with exercise adherence, importance and burden. These results suggest potential areas for interventions to improve exercise adherence
Unused Riparian Water Rights in WashingtonâDepartment of Ecology v. Abbott, 103 Wn. 2d 686, 694 P.2d 1071 (1985)
In Department of Ecology v. Abbott, the Washington Supreme Court addressed the long-standing question of whether landowners who failed to exercise consumptive riparian rights3 within a reasonable period after the adoption of the Water Code of 1917 (1917 Code) lost those rights. The question arose when a riparian landowner, who had registered consumptive water rights as required by statute in 1971, was denied those rights in a 1982 stream adjudication. The basis for the denial was that the landowner\u27s riparian rights had not been continuously exercised since 1917. The Water Rights Registration Act, with which the landowner complied in 1971, required that all riparian landowners register their water rights, whether exercised or not. In 1969, the legislature repealed a provision of the Water Rights Registration Act that would have extinguished unused riparian rights in Washington. Nevertheless, the Washington Supreme Court held (1) that the 1917 Code established prior appropriation as the dominant water law in Washington; (2) that after 1917 new water rights were acquired only by permit, and (3) that water rights existing in 1917 but not put to beneficial use by 1932 were relinquished
